Inspired by nature
Rachel's Story
UK designer, Rachel Barker creates simple and pure designs inspired by nature, with patterns which mix together beautifully.
Make your own special collection to compliment your mood and enhance every meal.
My name is Rachel Barker,
I am an English designer with my own ceramics company in the UK. I live and work in a quiet, rural region of England. The countryside and my
garden are a great source of pleasure and inspiration. My back ground and training is Fine Art, but being creative
affects every aspect of my life, not just my work.
I have been working with Zen since 2009. It has been an exciting opportunity to collaborate with a world class company making beautiful
ceramics. Together we have combined English and Korean tableware to make a versatile collection for all occasions.
I hope they will enhance your table throughout every season
A design of simple plant patterns, Dark and Light Straw are drawn form wheat fields after the harvest is cut, leaving straw stalks standing in rows, I love the pattern and rhythms of the lines of straw. Chicory - a wild flower found growing at the edge of fields - opens its petals early in the morning and shuts again by noon. The deep inky-blue patterns gives a rich yet subtle feel to the design.
"Chicory and Straw to add an extra ingredient to
help make the perfect occasion.
Inspired by harvested wheat fields and a wild
flower, the three simple designs;
Chicory, Light Straw and Dark Straw work
together to create a rich but uncluttered
look which compliments and enhances any meal. "
a collection of images from the English countryside
around our house and garden."
Rachel Barker takes a gentle stroll round a country
estate taking inspiration from the birds, animals and
landscape she finds and draws in a style that evokes
the engravings of former years.
"Glimpse over the hedge into the garden,
a colourful jumble of vegetables and flowers are
growing, garden tools sharp and clean, chickens
peck for seed in the courtyard, the family dog
eager to chase a pheasant beyond the gate."
It makes for a little snapshot of English rural life.
Each plate edged with a line of verse by John
Clare 18th century English poet.
Following the long tradition of combining botanical drawings with ceramics, Rachel Barker's beautifully tinted sketches add a fresh simplicity to this much loved decorative style. Sprigs and stems of wild flowers, finely drawn and anotated with the strange and ancient English names.
"I sketch flowers growing wild in the meadows
and fields around my village.
I love their slender structure, their tiny, intricate
flowers transformed into seed cases of countless
shapes and forms, with pungent scent, and ancient
names from English folklore."
